To follow up Tony: for a full-on programming job a candidate listed "Art-house cinema" under "Interests". After grilling the candidate on technical issues for 40 minutes, and all going relatively swimmingly, the interviewer smiled, mentioned that he was just back from a film festival, and started to discuss his favorite topic.... Cue wilting interviewee, and the sound of the Millennium Falcon clanking to a halt. It really isn't worth it.

Tony - precisely! Making stuff up like this is akin to handing over a hammer and chisel and inviting the interviewers to lop chunks off your credibility. There's no polite way to say this - it's just stupid.

Worse, you will be viewed (correctly) as being dishonest. If you, as a candidate, are lying about your hobbies, what else are you lying about (or will you lie about if I hire you)?
