Job-hunting when your industry has dried up

A discussion with Anne - one of the participants from the Q102 Workshop. Three key problems for Anne:
  • Not too many 'real' opportunities to apply to
  • Lots of applying via online routes which is not leading to many interviews
  • Forced to apply outside her area of immediate expertise as her industry has 'dried up.'
A goodly part of this is a positioning issue - because Anne can't simply move to a new organisation in her existing role, she has to think long and hard about how she advertises herself to potential employers. That positioning statement needs to be well-defined and well-presented and, at the moment, Anne still has some work to do in that regard.

I suspect that her situation is lamentably familiar to many of you; we'll be following up with her over the coming weeks. See what you think ...

Interview Tips

*Don’t come to the interview drunk and then proceed to pass out

*Don’t bring your mom, children or pets

*Tell your interviewer how you love to sing opera, then bust out signing acapella

*Don’t tell any racist jokes

*Do not submit an “Impossible is Nothing” type video resume (if you don’t know what we are talking about please Google it…it is quite entertaining)
