Nice piece in The New Scientist about the restorative power of 'stilling' your brain through meditation, or smiliar, practices. We refer to this as "silencing the committees in your head."
Wherever possible, I recommend getting stuff OUT of your head. Brain-dump it by setting up a task list in your electronic diary, dictaphoning it all or simply jotting it down in a notebook. When the chattering committees then start to quiet down, you can start thinking.
Lots of interesting noise about thinking and judgment in the press recently following publication of fMRI studies showing that the frontal cortex of the brain does not physically mature until the early 20s. So it would appear that my rather cruel contention that no-one is worth talking to until they are 23 years of age turns out to be based on more than just my foul, toxic world-view.
There are 168 hours available to you in a week and a massive number of those hours are already accounted for by sleep, domestic necessities, commuting and working.
How often do you give your head peace to really sit back and smell the coffee? A scheduled 30-60 minutes on a regular basis with the phone turned off and no other distractions can be a powerful weapon. I highly recommend it.
